Yes, Lord Shiva can indeed be worshipped with dried bilva leaves. Bilva leaves are considered sacred in Hinduism and are used to worship Lord Shiva. Bilva leaves, referred to as Bel Patra in Sanskrit, are used in many of the rituals and spiritual practices. Whether fresh or dried bilva leaves, offering bilva leaves with devotion is a common practice in most parts of India.
Bilva leaves are used for worship in all parts of India. Most of the worshippers of Lord Shiva use dried leaves as an offering under different traditions, but it is always wiseful to consult with an expert or a priest for their opinion as certain traditions may oppose its use. The proof of the use of this leaf can be found in the books of Shiva Purana, Linga Purana, Skanda Purana and Agamas and Tantras.
The bilva three itself holds importance in the Hindu beliefs. Apart from its leaves, the fruit it bears is also used to worship Lord Shiva as a symbol of devotion.
The three leaves of the Bel Patra are associated with Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. It is also sometimes associated with the three eyes of Lord Shiva. It is believed that these leaves contain a significant amount of components of Saatva (goodness) and absorb and emit these Sattvik frequencies that help to deflect Raja-Tama (Raja- action and passion, Tama-ignorance and inertia) particles in the atmosphere. This helps an individual to part himself from the material things and move himself a step closer to attain a higher form of spiritual awareness.
It is also believed to absorb Lord Shiva’s energy. When an individual worships him with the Bel Patra, his energy passes on to him. So, the leaf becomes a medium to go a step closer to Lord Shiva.
It is said that the Bilva tree grew from the sweat of Goddess Parvati. It is believed that she resides in every part of the tree- the leaves, fruit, stem, roots and branch. Bathing in the river or lake whose water touches the roots of the Bilva tree is considered holy water and is regarded as equivalent to bathing together in all the holy waters of the universe.
The Bel Patra leaves are not available to every part of the world where lord Shiva is worshipped. So the dried leaf is used instead. It is used in many households and temples.
