        Durga Puja is a festival celebrated to honour the victory of Maa Durga over the demon Mahishasura. This festival is the most awaited in West Bengal and it is celebrated with great pomp and show.

        During Durga Puja, people tend to buy multiple dresses during Puja shopping and they also buy jewellery and other puja-related items like flowers, prasad, puja utensils etc. in preparation for Durga Puja. This allows a boost in sales for the local apparel market and other craft markets as well.

        Durga Puja is the time of the year when talented and skilled artisans can showcase their skills. The making of Durga idols and the making of pandals to house the idols are proof of that. The artisans intricately create the idols with great attention to detail all with their hands without using machines. Idol-making is a very big industry in West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Odisha. These activities generate lots of employment for these artisans. The idol-making market of the entire Kolkata region is above 100 crores. Exports are also boosted during this time because the Indian community living in other countries also required idols for worship and the idols made in India are then sent to other countries are the artisans can get more profit.

        The pandal-making industry is also very large in the states celebrating Durga Puja. It contributes about more than 800 crores to West Bengal’s economy.

        There is also a substantial boost in the tourism sector during Durga Puja. People from far and wide come to visit the stunning pandals and worship the meticulously crafted idols. This influx of tourists allows local businesses like restaurants, hotels and transportation to thrive. These generate employment and revenue.

        During Durga Puja, the streets come alive with the hustle and bustle of Puja. this increases the local transportation business as well. This includes taxis, rickshaws and buses. The convenient transportation systems allow people to explore and experience the vibrant Puja celebrations.

        Durga Puja is also the time to experience the local culinary delights. The aroma of the food stalls attracts visitors towards them. Traditional treats like the roshogolla and pani puri make the taste buds of the visitors bounce. This not only lets the visitors experience the local cuisine but also allows an increase in sales for the local food vendors and supports them financially.

        Durga Puja is also the time to experience the local cultures. There is dance, art and music everywhere. Visitors can hear music blasting everywhere in megaphones. And people can also enjoy the traditional dances in the worship of Maa Durga. These activities not only entertain the people but also allow the local artists to thrive.

        Durga Puja is also the time when everyone comes together to do good for the community. There are blood donation drives, cleaning activities, food distribution activities and other charitable events during Durga Puja which not only allows the economically stable members of society to enjoy Durga Puja but also gives a chance to the less fortunate ones to enjoy the Puja holidays.

        Durga puja is a time to celebrate the victory of Durga over Mahishasura and hence the victory of good over evil. It is also a time when we can support the local businesses and by doing that we support the local economy.
