Maa Durga, the goddess of power or Shakti, is a major deity in Sanatan Dharma. She is also an avatar of Goddess Parvati.  She is worshipped in many forms, more specifically, nine forms. Her multifaceted nature carries deep symbolism and she is worshipped all over India.

Maa Durga’s nine forms teach us different life lessons and values which can enrich our lives deeply. Those nine avatars are:

Maa Shailputri is an avatar of goddess Durga, who took birth as the daughter of Lord Himalaya. Shail is the word for Mountain in Sanskrit. Therefore, Shailputri means the daughter of the mountains in Sanskrit. This form is associated with nature and searching for our souls. She guides us on our journey of searching for life’s meaning and purpose. Introspection plays a big part in this journey. We must first understand what we want and why we want that and then we will surely succeed. Sure, the first few years are going to be hard and we will feel like giving up, but we must remember why we chose the path that we are walking on. We must remember that this is our inner calling and always persistently aim for greater heights.

Maa Brahmacharini is an unmarried form of Goddess Durga. She deeply wanted to marry Lord Shiva and therefore did great penance.  this form of goddess Durga teaches us the significance of determination and penance. She teaches us that we must be focused to achieve our goals. We must not be discouraged by our failures and be determined to achieve success.

Maa Chandraghanta is the married form of the goddess Durga. She teaches us to always be on a quest for knowledge.  We should pay attention to our surroundings closely. And we should be quick to adapt to our surroundings.

Maa Kusmanda is an avatar of the goddess Durga who lives inside the sun and releases universal energy. She symbolises growth. She brings prosperity to everyone. She serves as a guide to removing darkness from the soul and directing light towards the righteous path.

Maa Skandamata is a form of the goddess Durga who is the mother of Lord Skanda. She embodies empathy and grace. She teaches us to be gentle and polite to everyone. Everyone should try to understand each other and be compassionate towards one another as these qualities are quite rare in this fast-paced generation. But it is important to apply these qualities in every aspect of our lives, be it professional, social, personal etc.

Maa Katyayani is the form of the goddess Durga in which she defeated Mahishasura. She is the warrior goddess. This form of goddess Durga teaches us to be resilient in difficult times. We must learn to fight for ourselves and others too. We must face the adversities that come our way with courage and resilience.

Maa Kaalratri is the form that goddess Durga took to kill the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. She is also called the destroyer of darkness. There will be times when we will meet with unfortunate events. But it is important for us to not be scared or feel defeated during those times. Instead, we must try to find solutions to those problems.

Maa Mahagauri is the eighth form of the goddess Durga. She teaches us enthusiasm. She teaches us to be cheerful and delighted and to take care of ourselves. If we are healthy, if our mind and body are healthy then everything will fall into place.

The ninth form of the goddess Durga is Maa Siddhidhatri. She represents expertise. We should always try to upgrade our skills, whatever it may be.

A person should try to cultivate all these qualities within them as they are sure to help with achieving success. Having only one quality is not enough, as we come face to face with various situations in our life, we must learn to embrace change and adapt accordingly.
