In the ancient times, when modern schooling wasn’t a thing, Gurukuls were the way of
getting all the knowledge and skills necessary for life. Gurukuls were integral to Sanatan
Dharm as they taught children about their religion, and made them able to understand
the difference between right and wrong. Not only this, these schools gave students all
the elementary and secondary level knowledge necessary to live a fruitful life.

Gurukuls helped discipline the pupils, teaching them important skills such as hunting
and gathering, fishing etc. which was necessary for the cavemen to survive. It taught
pupils to run their businesses, trading etc. so they can earn their livelihoods. Gurukuls
also taught science and mathematics, numerology and astrology etc. for people to find
out more about the universe and share their research with the whole world. The
medicinal theories were taught for curing the lives of people, along with sports and
Yoga. Most Importantly, pupils study the vedas in gurukuls. Learning the teachings of
the Vedas gives a person a new perspective of life, and the people who have the
knowledge of all four vedas, known as Chaturvedi, pass on their knowledge of vedas to
        others.

Gurukuls also used to teach Shastra Vidya, which is the skill of using a Sword and a
Bow and Arrow, along with other weapons. These skills were necessary because in
older times, monarchy was the way of ruling a kingdom and people had to be prepared
for any threats. Pupils who learned this Vidya used to become Sepoys in the army or
even army generals. The kings also studied Shastra Vidya to prove their competence
        with their position.

Legend has it, everybody from Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram to Yogiraj Krishna
attended Gurukul to improve their skills. Arjun, one of the Pandava brothers, had great
precision, even better than that of an eagle. All these great feats of skill and power were
made possible only because of their efforts and disciplined lifestyle.
Gurukuls not only teach different things, but also help carve a person into a better
person. A kind person is better than an egotistical learned person, and Gurukul infests
the best of both worlds in a person.

Today despite many changes, Gurukuls are still up and running but the main problem is
that earlier there was only one religion prevalent in the country which was Sanatan
Dharma but now when India has become a secular state, it is difficult to gather students
from different religions to join gurukuls and learn about Sanatan Dharma. Also
considering the fact that many gurukuls nowadays are not up to the mark and are not
able to provide quality education. Although many gurukuls are still keeping up with other
educational institutions and providing great results and human resources to not only
India, but the whole world, spreading knowledge about Sanatan Dharam and educating
students while improving their skill. Gurukuls are doing what the education system
couldn’t, i.e. focusing more on the practical knowledge while giving enough value to
theoretical knowledge and making them self sufficient.
