Yes, the city is regarded as one of the oldest religious cities.

and also known as a home to more than 2000 temples.

But there are a few more fascinating facts that make Varanasi the spiritual heart of India.

Before we go into these details, let’s talk about Varanasi.

        Varanasi

Varanasi” is a city in India also known as “kashi,” which was one of the city’s ancient names and is thought to be the world’s oldest holy city.

It is an old city since it has been constantly occupied by people without any periods of abandonment, and even archeologists and historians concur that the city is older than history, tradition, and knowledge.

As a result, the city’s cultural, social and religious traditions had been preserved and passed down through generations.

One of the reasons the city is known as the “Spiritual Heart of India” is because of this.

        Other reasons include:

        1) Pilgrimage
This simply means taking a trip to a sacred place that holds spiritual significance.

For centuries, the land of Varanasi (Kashi) has been the greatest pilgrimage destination for Hindus.

Pilgrims seeking Spiritual enlightenment, cleansing and connection to the divine visit the city from time to time. For instance, a pilgrim can choose to visit the Ganges River in Varanasi.

        2) Purification and Moksha
Varanasi is known as the spiritual heart of India because of the numerous sacred sites that provide spiritual cleansing and liberation from the life and death cycle (Moksha).

Some of these sacred sites include:

        1) Ganges River: The Ganges River is revered as the “Mother River” and is one of the holiest rivers in the world, drawing both Hindus and visitors.

Bathing in this river (especially on auspicious days) is thought to remove 10 lifetimes of sin, so contributing to spiritual liberation (Moksha).

        2) Ghats:  A ghat is a step that leads down to a river in India. Ghats have Spiritual importance in Varanasi. They function as ritual locations for washing, praying, and cremation in some cases.

Manikarnika Ghat is one such example, where bodies are burnt in order to obtain “Moksha.”

        3) Temples: Varanasi is noted for having over 2000 temples, the most famous of which is the golden shine temple dedicated to Lord Vishna.

A bath in the Ganges River and a visit to the temple are thought to purify a person.

However, Hindus believe that anyone who dies in Varanasi or has their ashes dispersed in the Ganges river attains moksha, making it India’s spiritual center.

        3) Festivals and Celebrations
Varanasi is known as the spiritual heart of India because of the festivities and celebrations held on auspicious days.

For example, the “Diwali of the Gods” commemorates the night Lord Shiva returned after fighting three demons, when he was greeted by burning lamps on the banks of the Ganges River and all the Gods descended to bathe in the river.

During the event, devotees take a bath in the Ganges River, burning candles and offering flowers in memory of their loved ones who have died.

In conclusion, Varanasi is recognized as India’s spiritual center not just because it is one of the oldest religious cities, but also because it has preserved religious and cultural ideas passed down through generations.
