Kailash-Mansarovar

Holding a significant position in the history of Sanatan Dharm, Mount Kailash is one of the most popular peaks in the whole world. Lying in the Kailash range, in the western part of the Tibetan Plateau in China, it is one of the Greater Himalayan peaks or as I like to call it – The Greatest Himalayan Peak.

Just 30 kilometers south of Mount Kailash is the Mansarovar Lake. Fed by the Kailash Glaciers, it is the source of The Indus/Sindhu River. Both these places are of great importance in the Sanatan Dharm and Kailash Mansarovar is a very popular pilgrimage as well.

        Kailashnath

Kailash Mansarovar is very important as it is the abode of Lord Shiva. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Shiva lived there with his wife, Goddess Parvati, and his two sons – Karthikeya and Ganesh.

Lankapati Ravan once tried to fly over Kailash while returning to Lanka but failed. Upon finding out about Shiva from Nandi, he mocked both of them. To this, Nandi got very angry and cursed Ravan to get killed by monkeys. Due to this insult, Ravan tried to uproot Kailash. However, Lord Shiva just pressed one toe on the ground and trapped Ravan underneath. Ravan cried and begged for forgiveness and sang hymns for Lord Shiva for thousands of years before he was finally released and also given an invincible sword. Also, at the Mansarovar Lake, Lord Shiva tamed Goddess Ganga by holding her in his hair and directing the flow towards Bhagirath after his penances for providing nirvana to the ashes of his ancestors.

        Stairway To Heaven

The mineral-rich area of Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake is said to be the starting point of The Stairway To Heaven. After the war of Kurukshetra, The remaining Pandavas and their wives traveled to the Kailash Summit. However, in the end, only Yudhishtir (The eldest of the Pandavas) was left with a dog and went to Heaven (Swarg).

        Place Of Geographical Importance

Just in the middle of 6 mountains, Kailash is like a lotus, just like Lord Shiva sitting in the same lotus position. There are many minerals to be found there, and the freshwater lake of Mansarovar speaks for itself.

        A Spiritual Expedition

The Kailash Mansarovar expedition is one of a kind in the whole world. Through the snow-covered mountains and the beautiful Mansarovar Lake, devotees always get lost in the serene surroundings which are as pure as Lord Shiva himself. Even after so many people visit Kailash Mansarovar every year, nobody has ever completed the summit. This is because the people who tried to climb the mountain have seen unnatural growth of hair and nails indicating speedy aging and some of these climbers were never seen again. Due to this, the Chinese Government has banned people from climbing to the top of the mountain.

Anyhow, this mystic expedition is worth the while. Connecting you and the Lord, giving you immense inner peace and prosperity. This journey will definitely change the way you lead your life.

Mount Kailash, revered as the abode of Mahadev, holds an unmatched position in Sanatan Dharm—not only as a place of pilgrimage but as a living symbol of balance, strength, and inner stillness. Your mention of the legends around Ravan, the Pandavas, and Ganga’s descent are reminders of how deeply intertwined our dharmic history is with these sacred spaces. These stories aren’t just mythology; they’re reflections of cosmic truths and spiritual insights that guide our lives even today.

The idea of Kailash being the ”Greatest Himalayan Peak” is not just poetic—it’s deeply spiritual. Unlike Everest or other summits that measure greatness in meters, Kailash’s height is measured in divine energy, mysticism, and the profound stillness that it offers every seeker.

Also, your point about nobody ever being able to summit Kailash adds to the sense of awe and reverence. Whether due to mysterious phenomena or divine will, it remains untouched—preserved for the Lord alone.
