Ma Durga, the epitome of strength (Shakti), enduring love, compassion and motherhood is the most worshipped and revered divine Goddesses of Hinduism. She, being larger than life, encompasses all the virtues of a divine mother which are humility, patience, abundance, forgiveness, and the most important of all “nourishment.” A personification of a universal mother, Ma Durga is often seen as a fierce divine figure who protects her children from any vices and evil forces. The very concept of divinity in motherhood is to guide children, protect them and embrace everything that comes her way to nurture a life. In higher dimensions, Durga Ma is the source of divine energy for all her devotees, so to say, she is the embodiment of creation and destruction.
When we address her as “Ma,” the word itself encapsulates creation. She is the manifestation of the divine energy that dwells in all living beings. The creator of this entire cosmos, Ma Durga or better addressed as “Jagadamba” is the sustaining force behind every existence. Motherhood in its entirety and everything that inhabits it, is what her divine creative force speaks of. Her omnipotent quality of being a creator is also exhibited by one of the arms she carries namely “Kamandalu” signifying the power to create. As a divine mother, Ma Durga is eternal and a constant source of life and birth.
The concept of nourishment is deeply ingrained in the foundation of Hinduism and Ma Durga is considered the source through which her children embrace comfort. This divine motherly attribute makes her the supreme of all spiritual beings as she guides the universe toward enlightenment and awareness. Just like a mother, her love is boundless and unconditional, and with that comes an endless ocean of love and care for her devotees. Through her teachings, Ma Durga nurtures her children to lead a life of self-righteousness, overcome negative vices, and attain spiritual liberation. In her divine warmth, devotees seek a sense of solace and comfort that is unmeasurable. A depiction of nourishment and abundance is often symbolized by a fruit, food, or a lotus that Ma Durga may hold in her arms. Although many other objects establish her to be the nourisher of the entire cosmos ensuring prosperity, sustenance, and spiritual fulfilment.
Being a Divine mother, Ma Durga is celebrated for her strength and fierce power in the realm of Hindu tradition. Like a fearless warrior, she defeats evil forces and ensures that her children are safe and blessed. She is the provider of courage and inner strength that enables all beings to renew, regenerate and eventually attain a state of balance. Her unwavering compassion gives immense strength to devotees to fight against any fears, anxieties, and difficulties by blessing them with confidence and the power to detach from actions. In the darkest times, you can seek that innate quality of fearlessness and strength from Ma to face any adversities.
Another facet of Ma Durga as a divine mother is her teachings and wisdom that empower her devotees to introspect, understand the nuances of life, and inculcate good virtues to eventually channelize their energies into doing good deeds. Ma helps her devotees to navigate their lives through her blessings so that they can adhere to good for an inner transformation.
Times may change, but her love for her devotees is eternal.
