        कात्यायनी महामाये, महायोगिन्यधीश्वरी।

        नन्दगोपसुतं देवी, पति मे कुरु ते नमः।।

Maa Katyayani is a revered Hindu goddess, and her story can be found in Hindu Puranas and scriptures. She is one of the forms of Goddess Durga and is particularly worshipped during the Navaratri festival, a nine-night celebration dedicated to the divine feminine energy.

        1. Devi Bhagavata Purana: The Devi Bhagavata Purana narrates the tale of Katyayani as follows: Long ago, there lived a great sage named Kata, who was renowned for his austerity and devotion to the goddess. He desired to have the Goddess Durga as his daughter. Pleased with his devotion, Durga took birth as his daughter and came to be known as Katyayani. She was a warrior goddess who later fought the demon Mahishasura and rid the world of his tyranny.

        2. Mahabharata: The Mahabharata, an ancient epic, mentions Katyayani in the context of Draupadi’s svayamvar (the ceremony where she was to choose her husband). Draupadi’s devotion to Lord Shiva, also known as Swayamvara Parvati, resulted in the appearance of Maa Katyayani who instructed Arjuna on how to win Draupadi’s hand in marriage.

        3. Durga Saptashati: This sacred scripture, also known as the Chandi Path, describes Katyayani as one of the manifestations of Goddess Durga who emerged to destroy the demon Mahishasura. She is depicted as a warrior goddess riding a lion, holding various weapons in her multiple arms.

        4. Kalika Purana: In this Purana, the story of Katyayani’s birth is described. She is believed to have taken birth in the house of Sage Katyayana, who performed severe penance to invoke her. The goddess appeared to him and granted his wish by becoming his daughter.

        5. Markandeya Purana: This Purana narrates the battle of Katyayani with the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Katyayani’s fierce form is depicted in this narrative, and her victory over the demon is celebrated during the festival of Navaratri.

        6. Devi Mahatmya: A part of the Markandeya Purana, the Devi Mahatmya or Chandi Path, is dedicated to the goddess Durga and her various forms, including Katyayani. It describes her divine attributes and her role in annihilating the demon Mahishasura.

Maa Katyayani is revered as a symbol of strength, courage, and divine power. Her worship during Navaratri is believed to bring blessings and protection to her devotees, and she is often depicted as a fierce goddess riding a lion, ready to battle the forces of evil.
