Maha Shivaratri is the great night of Shiv, marking the defeat of the darkness and ignorance of evil qualities from our minds.
The root cause of sadness and pain is we all are very much attached to this moh maya.It destroys knowledge and realisation of who we are. Bhagwan Shiv is said to have destroyed this ignorance, lust, and desire for worldly pleasures by opening the third eye. God is incorporeal so is his ‘eye’, the third eye of wisdom.

Overcoming lust is necessary for self-realization and for having a loving relationship with God. Indulgence in gross physical pleasures destroys the soul’s ability to appreciate and experience subtle truths. By regular practising of “ Rama Nama Namaskar”,a powerful siddha method which is helpful in eradicating lust.It also includes mantra of lord Hanuman along with mantras of Lord Shri Ram.

Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita mentioned lust and ignorance covers mind.It provokes us to walk on the path of adharma and make way for the downfall.

Many of us forget that underlying physical reality is a subtle, invisible realm of consciousness: Who am I, beneath all the labels that describe my physical identity and roles, labels of gender, nationality, religion, and profession? The ignorance of the fact that we are souls, is the basic cause of suffering.

When we identify ourselves with our body, we look at the label it carries. Then we look at the labels of others and compare them. Rather than seeing oneself and others as souls which are actually pure and divine light. We all are one spiritual family. We all are stuck to the labels of ‘yours’ and ‘mine’.It activates one or more  feelings such as anger, jealousy, and other such attachments.

Attachment to desire leads to constant conflicts and suffering. Shiv ji opens our eyes to wisdom, telling  the truth that we are just souls. This  darkness  of ignorance can only be dispelled by spirituality. The Supreme power lord Shiva can enlighten us through prayers.

It is true that there are numerous Gods, however the supreme power is one. Therefore it is worshipped in the form shivling which is an oval-shaped stone that does not have any body or facial features. The Shiv temples such as Somnath, Vishwanath, Mahakaleshwar, and Rameshwaram are dedicated to the light form of Shiv. The world celebrates Shivaratri. The divine says in Geeta  that,  “Whenever there is a decline in righteousness, the Supreme power will come for the protection of good, destruction of evil, and establishment of righteousness”.

        WHEN IS MAHASHIVRATRI CELEBRATED

Mahashivaratri is celebrated on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the month of phalgun.

        TYPES OF SHIVARATRI

There are four main types of Shivaratri: Mahashivaratri, Nitya shivratri,Sawan shivratri and Masik Shivaratri.

On Mahashivaratri devotees do fasting, perform pooja and rituals, visit shiva temples and seek blessings from God.

After Mahashivratri, the next powerful day which comes is Masik Shivaratri. It comes on the 14th day of every month of lunar eclipse. Some people on this day also observe fast and offer prayers to Lord Shiva.

SAWAN SHIVRATRI is celebrated in the month of July and August. It is also called Sawan maas.

Devotees  offer prayer to lord Shiva, observe fast, visit temples and religious places like Haridwar and Rishikesh. Devotees offer”milk, water, bel patra, and ber fruit “ to shivling and pray for prosperity and long life.

NITYA SHIVARATRI means people believe every night is Shiv night. For ardent devotees Shivaratri is celebrated everyday because every night when human sleeps lord Shiva surrounds us through his energies and makes us more spiritual and strong.

        Some do’s and don’ts :

Apart from above show kindness and humanity. Help the needies and show gratitude towards them.Avoid any kind of tamasic activities like having meat or alcohol. Avoid being negative.Focus on positivity.

Fasting helps in cleansing of mind and body.It teaches us self control. It gives mental peace.Do meditation as it helps in connecting to God.Last but not the least “ spread happiness”.
