Raksha Bandhan is more than just a traditional thread-tying ritual, it has rich symbolism that captures the essence of the bond between siblings. The rakhi is a holy thread that is generally decorated with detailed designs and bright colours. It represents the sister’s love, and prayers for the welfare of her brother. The brother promises to protect his sister in return by giving her gifts or other forms of appreciation. It shows the love and responsibility shared by siblings.

The Festival of Rakshabandhan is a very old tradision that is performed diversly and includes various stories like-

The story of Draupati and Krishna-

Draupadi tears her sari in order to bandage Krishna’s wound after he injures his wrist during the battle. This act of kindness overwhelms Krishna, who promises to thank her in some way in return. Krishna honours his promise and bravely saves Draupadi when she is in trouble. In addition, Draupadi tied a Rakhi on Krishna in Mahabharat before he left to participate in the great battle. Likewise, Kunti gave her grandson Abhimanyu a Rakhi before he entered battle.

The story of Bhagwan Ganesha and Devi Mansa

Devi Manasa, Ganesh’s sister, visited on Raksha Bandhan. She Ganesha a Rakhi. Shubh and Labh, Ganesh’s sons, were inspired by this lovely tradition but resentful that they didn’t have a sister, to be included in the Raksha Bandhan celebration, they begged their father for a sister. After a lot of convincing, Ganesh agrees. The three siblings celebrate Raksha Bandhan every year after Santoshi Maa is born.

The story of Devi Lakshmi and King Bali

After Vishnu defeats King Bali and takes control of the three worlds, King Bali invites Vishnu to stay in his palace. Vishnu’s wife, Goddess Lakshmi, is not happy with this arrangement. She makes King Bali her brother by tying a rakhi on his wrist. King Bali respects what she did by offering her a wish. Lakshmi requests that Vishnu return home.
