The Samudra Manthan practised by the Devas and Asurs was in this period for finding the holy water’ Amrut‘, but before that, a highly poisonous water came into the hands of both the vish, known as Halahal, and was so acidic that even the devs were experiencing burns. They prayed to lord Shiva to come and save them from this vish at that time, and Shiv Ji drank the vish but kept it in his throat so that it did not go down; because of this, he was named Neelkanth. Due to this vish’s warmth, Shiv Ji wore the moon to cool down the effect, and all of Dev offered Gangajal to Shiv Ji for a cooling effect.
During Sawan/Shrawan month, Lord Vishnu goes to the Yog Nidra. The maintenance of the earth is handed over to Lord Shiva, and it’s also respected that if you obey the rules and Recommendations of rituals in this month, like avoiding consumption of Milk and dairy products, Non-vegetarian foods, Green vegetables, and Alcohol, it’s considered sinful. Shiv Ji will bless you, and all your wishes will come true. He will remove you from the clusters and pain.
Basically, in this period, the season is monsoon, the season of rain, which results in an increase in the presence of water vapour in the atmosphere, leading to humidity, which increases the chances of spreading bacteria in the atmosphere, and plants are prone to them easily. Also, the water that gets collected in potholes due to rain and remains there for days and gets polluted is home to many bacteria and disease-carrying insects that are dependent on the plants for their food. This is the reason it is advised to avoid green veggies in Sawan month. The same plants are eaten by cattle, and as the plants were toxicated, the milk of Cattle got toxicated, and animals that are dependent on grass, etc., suffered from many Indigestion problems this month, which again led to improper purification of the milk inside them. This is the reason it is said to avoid milk and dairy products consumption.

Wait, there’s more; the other is that in this season, due to the increase in humidity level, the atmospheric pressure increases on our body, especially our digestive system, as the main thing is hydrochloric acid in our stomach, which is at its highest temperature in this month due to the scarcity of water in our body as much of the water present in our body gets out through sweat. That’s why our digestive system takes a lot of time to digest, and milk and dairy products are hard to digest, which leads to indigestion problems like diarrhea, Constipation, etc. This is also the reason why non-vegetarian food is not recommended during this period. The reason alcohol is also said not to be consumed is due to its acidic nature, which increases the level of acid in our body when mixed with hydrochloric acid, which is present in our stomach and leads to acidity. We all know how much alcohol is harmful for the human body in general.
The ‘Dhature ka Phool‘, which is present on Shivling and Belpatras are natural purifiers that purify the running milk in seconds. That milk is collected and used as Charnamrit which is offered to devotees and to the poor to drink. It is believed that Charnamrit collected is energized as it passes through the Shivling.

Although Nowadays some of these aren’t necessary, milk is delivered to our doorstep after boiling, purifying, packaging, and a lot of safety checks, and the milk we offer to Shivlinga just goes down to the sewage instead of being used as Charnamrit. But we should remember to respect our tradition, and follow our culture, and its rituals, as all these are based on science as well.
