        The name Krishn Janmashtmi is a combination of Krishn Janam (Birth) and ashtmi (8th day of the dark fort night). It marks the birth of Sri Krishn, son of Vasudeva and Devaki. He is a major Hindu deity and played a major role in Mahabharata and teaching Bhagvad Gita to Arjuna.

        According to Hindu mythology while Vasudeva and Devaki got forced prisoner by Devaki’s brother Kansa in Mathura, Krishn was born. The cruel and evil king Kansa was warned that the eighth child to be born to Devaki will be born to kill him. Six of Devaki’s sons were killed by Kamsa, but Vasudeva was able to spare the eighth children, Krishn.

         

        Krishn was born in karagar(a prison where bonded labours are kept) in Mathura where People were commonly facing threats, there was neither freedom nor liberty, and they received even the most fundamental of their rights. To terminate Kamsa’s horrible rule, Vishnu’s ninth avtar, Krishn, was born.

        Every Indian state also in Abroad celebrates Krishn Janmashtami in a unique way. It is also referred to as Gokulashtami in Maharashtra. Particularly in Mumbai, the tradition of Dahi Handi is very popular in alongside temple decoration and other traditional events. To break an earthen pot that is suspended with ropes from a great height and is full with curd, young men and boys create a human pyramid. t is symbolic of Bal Krishn as he would do the same for his fondness to curd and butter.

        On this day, devotees keep a fast, dress traditionally, bathe and decorate the idols of Lord Krishn with new clothing and jewellery, and ask for blessings for their families’ welfare. Also, many practise a religious fasts and decorate their homes with flowers and rangoli. Some individuals eat light, sattvik meals throughout the day, while others observe the ‘nirjala vrat’ till midnight, which is thought to be the moment of Lord Krishn’s birth. The Lord Krishn puja is done in Nishita Kaal since he was born at midnight. After celebrating Krishn’s birth at midnight, devotees present the idols with his beloved maakhan (white butter), milk, and curd.
