नमोऽस्तु ते व्यास विशालबुद्धे फुल्लारविन्दायतपत्रनेत्रः। येन त्वया भारततैलपूर्णः प्रज्ज्वालितो ज्ञानमयप्रदीपः।।
The Vedas are ‘Knowledge’. The Vedas are the true knowledge of life, the world, and God. According to Indian belief, this knowledge is given by God, and the mantras or hymns in which it is stored have been given the name of the Vedas. Right from the beginning of creation, for the guidance of human life and its welfare, this true knowledge of nature has been incorporated from time to time in the thoughts of sages, and it has been manifested through speech through mantras.
The word ‘Veda’ is derived from the vid dhatu, which gives great benefits in the form of knowledge. In the beginning, this knowledge of the Vedas was transmitted orally from generation to generation through the Guru-disciple tradition, but later Krishna Devpayan Vyas, the great and brilliant son of Maharishi Parashar, collected the knowledge of the Vedas in writing, and he was called Ved Vyas. All this knowledge is compiled in the four Vedas. Some scholars believe that there was only one Veda in the beginning, but from the point of view of study, it was divided into four parts.- RIGVEDA (Collection of praise mantras) – 10,521 MANTRA
- YAJURVEDA (Collection of Yagya Karma Mantras) – 1,975 MANTRA
- SAMVEDA (Collection of lyrical chants) – 1,873 MANTRA
- ATHARVAVEDA (Collection of various mantras) – 5,977 MANTRA
Some scholars believe that there were only three Vedas in the beginning. ‘Atharvveda’ was composed later, but as far as their period – As for the question of composition, it seems more appropriate to say that all four Vedas were not composed at the same time. There are thousands of mantras or hymns in these Vedas; they were also not composed by any one sage at the same time; various sages composed these mantras in their respective periods, and all of them joined at one place. It has taken many years to compose these Vedas.
