Nishkaam Karma – “The culture of Sanatan Dharma” Meaning-
1-Nishkaam/Nishkaam is a combination of nih+kam or nishh+kaam. Here “Nih” or “Nih” means “without” and “Kam/Kaam” means “Kamna“/”Kamna”, i.e. any kind of desire.
2-Karma/Karma means “action“/”action”, root “kri/kri”.
So, the term “Nishkama Karma” means “action without intention” or “action without purpose”.
To elaborate on this – Krishna suggests that we have authority only over the act or action and not over its consequences, whether good or bad. Our actions, our desires should be “desireless”, we should not desire any pleasant (or unpleasant) outcome.
The opposite of Sakam Karma (self-centered actions) or actions done with desires, Nishkaam Karma has been variously explained as ‘Duty for duty’s sake’ and as ‘Detached Involvement’, which is neither negative attitude nor indifference.
How to follow the ideal of Nishkaam Karma ?
At the time of Satyug, Shri Ram, on the request of Rishi- Muni, had destroyed many demons who were causing harm to humanity. Without anyone’s wish, he had given the death of Lanka Pati Ravan in the war to Rajpath Ravan’s younger brother Vibhishana. Selfless action frees one from bondages and desires and provides satisfaction.
Vishva’s worst religious war, in Mahabharata, Arjun, one of the five Pandavas, left his astron before the war, and after seeing his brothers, Guru Pitamah Bhishma and Mitra brothers in the form of princesses in the war land, Arjun was thrilled. And from those warsRefused.Lord Krishna told them that this war is not a simple war but a religious war for their wealth and not for their empire, after it Dharma will be established and this war has to be waged by them to end the religion of their kingdom Arjun.
Another aspect that differentiates it from Sakam or selfish action, is that while the former is guided by inspiration, the latter is all about motivation, and that makes the central difference in its results, for example, Sakam Karma might lead to excessive work pressure and workaholism as it aimsat success, and hence created more chances of physical and psychological burnout.moreover, Nishkam Karma means a more balanced approach to work, and as work has been turned into a pursuit of personal excellence, which results in greater personal satisfaction, which one would have otherwise sought in job satisfaction coming from external rewards.
In Bhagwat Geeta –
“कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।
मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि।।”
Meaning –
Your authority lies in your actions only, not in your knowledge and devotion. While doing work there (in the path of karma), you should never have any right in the results of your work, that is, you should not have any desire for the results of your work at any stage.
If you have a desire for the results of your actions, then you will be the reason for achieving the results of your actions. Therefore, do not become the reason for not getting the results of your actions in this way.
Because when a human being is inspired by the desire for the results of his actions and engages in action, then he becomes the cause of rebirth as the result of his actions.
If you do not desire the results of your actions, then there is no need to perform painful actions. Thus, even in not doing actions, you should not have any attachment.
Therefore Karma-yoga teaches, “Do not abandon the world; Live in the world, absorb its influences as much as you can; But if it is for your own pleasure, then do not work at all.
