The depth of any religion can be understood by the depth in philosophies and explanations told in its scriptures. And here in our Sanatan Dharma we have explanations of quantum theory, space, multiverse, time and atomic structure.
We do have a little bit of explanation of time and the formation of the universe in Islam and Christianity. But according to these ideologies the universe is just thousands of years old. But by the explanation of modern science we can assume that these explanations are somewhat faulty. Because modern science says that the age of the universe is 4.3 billion years old.
And here Sanatan Dharma comes with a twist. This article will explain to you all the complexities people have in understanding the concept of Yugas from our scriptures. This gonna be a number heavy article :-
1. The Cycle of Yugas
Do you know what this Yuga is? The Yuga of Kali. In hindi the kali means a flower petal, if you assume the whole chatur yuga as a flower, the yuga of kali takes the place of just a flower petal. Every Chatur yuga cycle starts with the Yuga of Satya, followed by the Yuga of Treta, Dwapar and Kali. By the passage of each yuga the height, weight, purity, strength and the habit of righteousness decreases by every yuga.- Yuga of Satya
This yuga means the yuga of righteousness. Where all people were indulged in their works and everyone had Brahmin like qualities, it was the yuga where no war, no clash, no robbery, no lies and no type of crimes existed. There was only one religion, which was followed by everyone, the worship of Narayana and respecting his creation. It was the era of total bliss where too many saints were doing penances for the goodwill of the world.
At that era everyone was more than 30 ft tall and lived over ten thousands of years. People had more connection with nature and were indulged in simple activities like cow breeding. There was no agriculture and mining activities because the Holy mother earth was giving everyone that everyone needs, because everyone was indulged in the service of lord.
This Yuga is four times of the yuga of Kali = 4,32,000 * 4 = 17,28,000 years
- Yuga of Treta
In this Yuga the symbolic bull of Dharma came on three feet depicting the slight decline of Dharma in the society. People became aware of sins, theft and became more and more ambitious towards capturing wealth. Kingdom and social hierarchy are implemented in the society because of the nature of the people, if someone wants to do service, want to do business, defending his own mother land or want to be a Brahmin or a social influencer.
Note:- People think that the varna system was a forced process. People from different varnas were suffering under the rule of brahmins. But anyone from any varna was allowed to be a brahmin if he went through a spiritual enlightenment. The examples are Valmiki, Vishwamitra, Vyasa and Matanga. Who converted to brahmin from a Shudra, Kshatriya, Fisherman and Shudra respectively.
In this yuga people turned towards different practices like worshiping of demigods, ancestors etc. Everyone was around 23-25 ft tall and lived at least for 10,000 years. The entities like Rakshasas, Danavas and Asuras started messing up with people’s peace at that era. The peace in the society was slightly disturbed.
This Yuga is triple the time span of the Yuga of Kali= 4,32, 000 * 3 = 12,96,000 years
– Incarnations and its Name
The name of this yuga is Treta which means three, this is why most of the people wonder why it comes in second place instead of third. The reason why it is three times bigger than the Yuga of Kali and the another reason is that the Supreme Lord took three incarnations in this Yuga as Vamana, Parshurama and Rama, in different chatur yugas and the epic of Ramayana took place.- Yuga of Dwapara
In the Yuga of Dwapara evil fought head on with goodness and planted itself inside of people. Too many people lost their strength, height and purity in this yuga becoming more and more greedy. A ton of war and conflicts took place and too many diseases appeared, decreasing the lifespan of everyone to 1000 years. The epic of Mahabharata took place in this yuga.
This Yuga is double the time span of the Yuga of Kali= 4,32, 000 * 2 = 8,64,000 years
- Yuga of Kali
The Yuga of Kali began over 5000 years ago. According to scriptures this yuga is 4,32,000 years long, the first ten thousand years is said to be the golden age where the dharma will continue to spread because these 10,000 years are in the transition with the Yuga of Dwapara.
The Yuga of Kali is the darkest age where all leaders will act like thieves and material desire in people will increase to its peak. Everyone will try to exploit everyone and no one will be considered as the true brahmin because everyone in this Yuag will act like a Shudra (Service class), meat eating and practicing wrong beliefs will increase The charm of people will be judged by their hair. No one will respect family relations and will make illegal relations with them.
This Yuga will witness the decline of the Varnashrama system (The vedic system that tells people how to act in society at different ages of life). The first king of the Yuga of Kali was the Maharaja Parikshita who told Kaliyuga to keep himself in certain places like in gambling houses, Prostitution houses,in alcohol and in the money which is earned dishonestly.
Currently the lifespan has decreased to 80 years and people now are 6 feet tall. The lifespan at the end of this dark era will decrease to 20 years. The cow will become as dwarf as goat and human will also decrease in the same ratio.
2. Manvantaras
All these yugas in a set called a single chatur yuga, and a single chatur yuga cycles itself 71 times in a manvantara. And you will be amazed to know that there are a total 14 manvantaras. Each and every yuga started by the arrival of a Manu and the name of that manu becomes the name of that Manavantara. Like the first manvantara was the Swayambhuva Manvantara which was started by Swayambhuva Manu, who was the first person who started life on the earth with his wife Shatrupa. He had three daughters namely Devahuti, Prasuti and Akuti and Two sons Priyavrata and Uttanapada. And this Manavantara was started by the king Vaivashvat Manu, who is the seventh Manu of all, the one who wrote Manu Smriti, the Hindu rule book. The Manu who witnessed Lord Matsya’s arrival on the earth and created the giant boat to survive the great flood. He waa the one who kept each and every species’ pair in his boat, took seeds of each and every plant and along with Saptarishis and his wife he survived the flood and established life again on the earth. There are a total 14 manus who starts the earth by the end of 71st chatur yuga of their previous manavantara.
The name of all manus are as follows:-
- Swayambhuva Manu
- Svarochisha Manu
- Uttama Manu
- Tapasa Manu
- Raivata Manu
- Chakshusha Manu
- Vaivasvata Manu
- Savarni Manu
- Daksha Savarni Manu
- Brahma Savarni Manu
- Dharma Savarni Manu
- Rudra Savarni Manu
- Raucya Manu
- Indra Savarni Manu
3. Brahma : The Cosmic Entity
Have you heard the story of Brahma kidnapping all the friends of Lord Krishna to test if he is a god or not. When he Kidnapped lord krishna’s friends and all the calves, he kept them in yoga nidra in brahma loka for a few days, that was equal to a year on the earth. For a year Krishna took the form of his friends and calves and tricked brahma. Resulting his surrender to Krishna.According to another story of Vishnu Puran the serpent king Kakudmi visited Brahma to find a suitable groom for his daughter. When they arrived, Brahma was listening to a musical performance by the gandharvas, so they waited patiently until the performance was finished. Then, Kakudmi bowed humbly, made his request and presented his shortlist of candidates. Brahma laughed, and explained that time runs differently on different planes of existence and that during the short time they had waited in Brahmaloka to see him, 27 chatur-yugas had passed on Earth and all the candidates had died long ago.
By these stories you can assume that how fast the time slips in Brahma loka (In the Abode where Brahma resides)
The day of Brahma starts with the creation of Swayambhuva Manu, at the start of each day he creates the world and at the end of the day all these 14 Manavantaras have passed. The calculation goes like this, when you add all the figures of the years in one chatur yuga you will find that one chatur yuga lasts till 43,20,000 years. And according to Bhagwad Geeta 8.17 the age of Brahma is 1000 chatur yugas. So, by these numbers you can calculate that the age of brahma is 4,32,00,00,000 human years (4.3 billion human years)
But Vedas go beyond this conception. Vedas explain that only the first half of the day of Brahma is 4.3 billion years long and the other half is 4.3 billion years long as well. Which makes the whole day of Brahma 8.6 billion years long. And wait, the calculation does not end here, this 8.6 billion year is just a day, there are a total 360 days in Brahma’s one year and he lives for 100 years.
4. Some more facts
- The length of the divine day of devas in higher realm is equal to a year of humans.
- 360 human years are equal to one divine year.
- 12000 divine years are equal to one chatur yuga.
- In every 24th chatur yuga’s Treta Yuga of the 7th manavantara Lord ram appears and in every 28th (Current) chatur yuga’s Dwapara Yuga of the 7th manavantara Lord Krishna appears.
- All the Dashavataras do not appear in the chronological order; it depends on the desire of the lord. Like Lord Varaha appeared in Swayambhuva manvantra and also in the Caksusa Manvantara.
