The traditional belief of not allowing women to perform last rites at shamshan has been prevalent for a long time.
From a scientific point of view, the dead body hosts various bacteria, and during the last rites, the male relatives come in contact with the body. Bacteria can stick to the hair, even after a bath, which is why the hair is removed. Conversely, shaving women’s hair is not considered appropriate.
According to the Garuda Purana, the soul of the deceased is not ready to leave the body even after death and comes back from Yamlok to contact their family. To prevent this, family members get their heads shaved, as the soul takes support of their hair to make contact. However, shaving of women’s hair is not considered auspicious.
Additionally, it is believed that negative energy is present at the shamshan, which can easily enter women’s bodies as they are considered to be soft-hearted. The negative energy may lead to the spread of diseases inside their bodies.
