During the churning of the ocean (samudramanthan), a deadly poison called Halahal emerged, causing great concern for the earth. The gods prayed to Lord Shiva to help them, and he agreed to drink the poison. However, the poison turned his throat blue, so the gods asked him to drink cold milk to ease the pain.
Before consuming the milk, Shiva asked for permission from the milk itself. Upon receiving consent, he drank the milk, and the poison’s effects were significantly reduced. The remaining poison was consumed by snakes, and thus the world was saved from the deadly effects of Halahal.

This event became a widely accepted belief, and gods and goddesses began consuming milk as a form of medicine. Even today, offering raw milk in many temples is considered an auspicious practice.
